On this episode of Public Health America, Dr. Latimer speaks with Dr. Rachel Weissler, a postdoctoral fellow in Psychology, Linguistics, and Black Studies in the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Oregon. She discusses the importance of understanding linguistic differences in a social landscape where people are treated in various ways based on how they speak. Ideologies about "right" and "wrong" ways of speaking in the U.S. disproportionately affect African Americans in the United States. This is especially troubling as Black people are linguistic innovators who have their language appropriated often by the American public at large.
