On This Date - Jackie Robinson Day is created

"On This Date" in Bronx sports history - April 15th, 1997, American hero Jackie Robinson’s #42 was retired across the game of baseball. Robinson, who had broken baseball’s color barrier 50 years prior, was honored by then commissioner Bud Selig. Ever since, on this date baseball celebrates Jackie’s legacy, allowing every player in the game to wear #42 for one day.
