Dr. William Latimer speaks with Dr. Zobeida Bonilla, an Associate Professor of Maternal and Child Health at the University of Minnesota School of Public Health, public health practitioner, and medical anthropologist. Dr. Bonilla discusses one of her recent projects examining, from a qualitative perspective, the experiences of migrant women, and specifically migrant mothers, with the immigration system. Recent data show an increase in the rates of preterm births and/or at low birth weight and may be linked to stressors related to the immigrant experience, national policies that target immigrants, and a national anti-immigrant sentiment/rhetoric that is hurting families, mothers, and children. In addition, she shares he experience of being Born and raised in the town of Cayey, in a rural community named Pasto Viejo.
