Public Health America with Dr. William Latimer: Dr. Tomoko Udo

Dr. William Latimer speaks with Dr. Tomoko Udo, an Associate Professor at Department of Health Policy, Management, and Behavior, and Co-Associate Director for the Center for Collaborative HIV Research in Policy and Practice at School of Public Health, University at Albany. In this episode Dr. Udo discusses the need to change society’s approach to substance use and mental illnesses across the continuum of the criminal justice system based on her experiences with working with the programs such as Albany County Crisis Officials Responding and Diverting (ACCORD) program and Hope Not Handcuff – Hudson Valley. She also discusses the need for evidence-based selection of CJS reform models, particularly how many interventions that are considered ‘innovative and successful’ often cannot be replicated because these programs are never evaluated.
