After months of public criticism, Mayor De Blasio has agreed to push back the start date for in-school learning by more than a week to September 21. He has also changed his position and is now committed to Covid-19 testing all students. In so doing, the Mayor averted a strike vote by the United Federation of Teachers, who have been raising alarm over pandemic safety measures. While the Bronx prepares to head back to school, Borough President Ruben Diaz, Jr. is concerned over the departure of the City’s top health expert, Dr. Oxiris Barbot. Barbot was known for sometimes taking positions at variance with the mayor. Mayor De Blasio replaced Dr. Barbot with Dr. Dave Chokshi, who now splits his time between serving as New York City Health Commissioner and maintaining his medical practice with Bellevue Hospital.
