Perspectives | Abstinence-based Sex-Ed vs New York City's new Sex Ed Mandate
Guest: Michael Benjamin, NYC Parents Choice Coalition Organizers
Guest: Greg Pfundstein, Executive Director of the Chiaroscuro Foundation
On this episode, our guest discuss their goal to challenge the Department of Education's new sex education mandate.
This diverse parent and community coalition feels strongly that an alternative curriculum or instruction program must be allowed under this mandate for parents and schools which prefer a different approach to sex education.
The coalition wants all children to receive age-appropriate, scientific-based information that encourages abstinence and helps children to make the right life choices. Parents need to be empowered with information so they can tell their school principals that they want the choice of an abstinence-based sex education curriculum. We believe parents would "opt-in" if given the choice of sex education curricula. Public opinion surveys reveal that over 75% of parents want their religious values reflected in school-based sex education curricula.
