Individuals who did not have the opportunity to attend BronxNet's 2012 BETA (Bronx Excellence in Television Access) Awards will be able to experience the event on BronxNet's channels and website.
During the event, Hip-Hop Legend Grandmaster Mele Mel encouraged the audience to vote via a public service announcement and an original song on the "Power of the Voice," as months of mystery ended for some Bronx producers who discovered they were winners of BETA Awards in specific categories.
Eligible BETA Awards entrants are independent access producers who produce programs for BronxNet channels. Experts from outside BronxNet select winning programs and producers. Awards presenters included Baron Ambrosia of the Cooking Channel and BronxNet, and other notables. In other highlights, Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz, Jr. presented a citation to all BronxNet producers and to former Hostos Center for Arts & Culture Director Wally Edgecombe for the years of arts programming he brought to the Bronx and to BronxNet, and NYC Board of Elections Commissioner J.C. Polanco joined BronxNet Executive Director Michael Max Knobbe in premiering the BronxNet-produced voting PSA. Performance highlights included an original song "Power of the Voice," written by BETA Awards Producer Audrey Duncan, with music engineered by DJ Rob Dinero, performed by Grandmaster Mele Mel, Opera Steve and Erika Soto. Other performers included BronxNet's Rhina Valentin and the energetic band Los Pleneros de la 21.
"2012 represents 20 years of production training for the public and 19 years of broadcasting by BronxNet. The men and women who participate in BronxNet's production training produce important programs for our channels. Our annual BETA Awards gives us a chance to work with great presenters to pay tribute to dedicated Bronx producers as we highlight important issues," said BronxNet Executive Director Michael Max Knobbe. The 2012 BETA Awards airs on BronxNet Channels 67 and 33, with multiple airtimes in the following weeks.
