Bronxites residing in the South Bronx didn’t have to travel far to attain media skills to produce their own television programs. Thanks to a partnership between BronxNet and Pregones Theater that kicked off with Cycle 1 training in May, Bronx residents were able to participate in BronxNet’s hands-on production classes at Teatro Pregones’ Casablanca building on Walton Avenue near 149 Training Cycle 2 at Pregones took place from August through September.

Filmmaker Fermin Suarez taught participants the nuts and bolts of creating programs, from videography, audio recording and lighting to producing, location planning and directing and more.

As with other BronxNet production certification classes, Bronx residents who completed the training have the opportunity to become certified public access producers, and receive access to production equipment and airtime on BronxNet channels for the purpose of producing and broadcasting their own independent television programs.

“BronxNet, your community television station and media center has covered amazing performances at Teatro Pregones, and we were proud to partner to provide media production workshops for Bronx residents and students in the South Bronx. In our 20th year of broadcasting, BronxNet has provided training for thousands of Bronxites, helping to build careers in media while opening the doors for television programs that reflect the vision of the people of our borough,” said BronxNet Executive Director Michael Max Knobbe. Pregones Associate Artistic Director Alvan Colón Lespier stated: “We are very happy to be part of this initiative which expands our services to the Bronx community.” BronxNet is the independent not-for-profit organization serving the people of the Bronx through the provision of media production training, access to technology, and cable television channels.
